She came to me yesterday evening
by a fire, in the farmhouse,
shelling beans.
It was her and an old man
who I'd never met.
And they both reached out
to embrace me.
They talked of red winters.
They talked of old wars.
Then she laughed,
and she turned to me.
She said, "Don't ya wanna run
past that corn toward that sun?
Grab those dripping-gold ears
and fling them out?
You used to talk about it.
You used to talk about it.
So, what are you waiting for?"
- - - - - - - - -
She came to me yesterday evening
on a fence, by a river -
brown skinned.
She smelled of spices.
Her dress was blue.
And she knew all the things
I've whispered to you.
The banks were a tangle
of briers and shoots.
But I knew that she could
cut through 'em.
She said, "Don't ya wanna run
past that dripping-gold sun?
Toward that ocean, toward those
catbird-blue waves?
You used to talk about it.
You used to talk about it.
So, what are you waiting for?"
